UBC Botanical Garden, Southwest Marine Drive, Vancouver, BC, Canada
During our Botanical Gardens tour, our group enjoyed seeing how many different types of plants there are, and the power of experiential learning, through activities such as a simple walk, to teach our students about local plants that are indigenous to their community. Another aspect of the Botanical Gardens field trip that we as a group enjoyed was the outdoor classroom that was shown to us by one of the guides. The outdoor classroom is located in the food garden and here, students can learn about planting gardens and sustainable food practices. In other words, the outdoor classroom demonstrates how place is integral to an effective land-based approach to learning.
