AMS Student Nest, University Boulevard, UBC, Vancouver, BC, Canada
We began our reflection by returning to our place, the Shadow Tree. At the top of the Nest, our group began with a sit-spot reflection.
How have we grown? What skills have we gained?
Guneev: “After discussing with Jessica, an Indigenous knowledge holder, we changed directions with our inquiry. We realized how public art pieces have many different meanings- we all had different meanings that we gave the Shadow Tree.”
Mila: “It was interesting hearing everyones perspectives on the Shadow Tree. I liked being able to work all our ideas out together as a group and with Jessica during the call. How do you think changing directions helped us delve deeper into our inquiry?”
Guneev: “It sparked many questions among us. This is dependent on the perspective that we see the art with. This change grew as we read the two-eyed seeing and seven generational articles. We wanted to inquire on how public art pieces act as a tool to reclaim the land. We then expanded our question to include other public art pieces. This was such a fascinating process as I was looking at the art from a new perspective. I now understand the importance of asking the question why.”
