The Musqueam Post

The Musqueam Post

UBC Bookstore, University Boulevard, Vancouver, BC, Canada

The Musqueam Post located at the entrance of campus by the UBC Bookstore. This public art acts a tool to reclaim Indigenous land within campus as it “reaffirms the Musqueam’s continued connection to this part of their traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory” (UBC Life, 2021). The background story of this post begins with a double headed serpent (sʔi:ɬqəy̓) who fertilizes this particular area. The fertilization results in a unique plant called “məθkʷəy̓”. I walk by this post almost everyday on my way to the teaching building. After researching the significance of this post, I realize that this serpent has allowed us to learn and play on its land. We are considered as visitors and must cherish our relationship to the Musqueam people who were here before UBC’s legacy began.
